If you're a college football fan, you're probably buzzing with excitement for the 2026 season, and spring practice is a big part of that buzz. It's a key time for teams to lay the groundwork, as coaches check out their players, tweak their game plans, and basically run try-outs before the fall games begin. With fresh recruits, returning players, and the constantly changing portal transfers, spring practice gives us a sneak peek at where teams might be headed. In this article, we'll dive into the big stories, standout players, and important matchups that will shape the season, giving fans an inside scoop on what to expect as teams get ready for another awesome year of college football.
Clemson
2025 Season: Record 7-6, Unranked. Did not make CFB Playoff
A battle at QB looks legit between last years back up Vizzina and Freshman Tait Reynolds. The concerning thing is Reynolds is a 3* out of high school and already challenging. This may seem good but also worrying that someone as low ranked is already challenging for the starting role. The recruiting services don’t get it that wrong and when they do it’s not often freshman year they get proven wrong.
Alabama
QB Jr Mack started the spring game with the starters and Russell with the back ups, before Mack got dinged and Russell moved to the starters. Both, I think, are good options for whoever wins out, but Mack has the edge for me at the moment. The Run game still looks a problem, as it was last season. High rated freshman Crowell was in a boot at the spring game. He was expected to play a big role this coming season.
Tennessee
2025 Season: Record 8-5, Unranked. Did not make CFB Playoff
5* freshman QBs MacIntyre and Brandon were the expected battle for QB but Colorado transfer Staub, had the best numbers from the spring game. Knowles comes in as DC but his defence always takes a season or 2 to get going, as it did at Ohio state. He never got a chance at Penn st for that second season improvement.
Florida
2025 Season: Record 4-8, Unranked. Did not make CFB Playoff
When Aaron Philo followed OC Buster Faulkner from Georgia tech to Gainesville, everyone had him pencilled in as the starter. But last year’s back up Tramell Jones had a great showing at the spring game, to really make that a challenge. Wake transfer Micah Mays looks a great get at WR. With an easy schedule, expect Florida to be up at the top end of the SEC next season.
LSU
2025 Season: Record 7-6, Unranked. Did not make CFB Playoff
No spring game but reports from spring practice. Transfer QB Sam Levitt has missed spring with a foot injury that made him miss the end of Arizona states season. Offence is a work in progress, but the OLine looks a lot better, in no small part due to Colorado transfer Jordan Seaton. I worry, if Levitt can’t stay healthy, whether the back ups are good enough. With Kiffin coming in and the sky high expectations, Levitt’s health will determine if they are met.
Stay tuned for more as Spring Practice continues!
